What actually changes
AVIF and JPG are not the same picture in two wrappers.
AVIF is a still frame coded with AV1 and wrapped in HEIF. It is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG, which every tool understands. The JPEG will be noticeably larger than the AVIF at the same visible quality.
Worth knowing first
AVIF supports 10 and 12-bit colour and HDR; JPEG is 8-bit SDR. An HDR AVIF gets tone-mapped down, so bright skies and neon can shift and lose separation. Any alpha channel is filled with white.

Why is AVIF so much smaller than JPEG?
It uses AV1 video intra coding, which has far better prediction and transform tools than JPEG's 1992 DCT. Half the bytes for the same quality is normal.
What opens AVIF natively?
All current browsers, Windows 11 with the AV1 extension, and recent macOS. The gap is in older desktop applications and print workflows.
