What actually changes
EPS and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The PostScript inside the EPS is interpreted and drawn to a raster at a resolution you choose, then stored as PNG.
Worth knowing first
Many EPS files carry a low resolution preview image for on-screen placement. Weak converters export that preview instead of interpreting the PostScript, which is why a converted EPS sometimes comes out pixelated at exactly 72 DPI. A real interpreter renders the actual artwork.

Why is EPS still used?
Print and sign-making workflows standardised on it decades ago, and the files still arrive from stock libraries and brand asset kits.
Does EPS support transparency?
Not natively. EPS predates it, so files that look transparent usually rely on clipping paths, and edges can come out harder than expected.
