What actually changes
JFIF and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The JPEG data inside the JFIF wrapper is decoded once and stored losslessly as PNG. Every subsequent save is free of further loss, at the cost of a file two to five times larger.
Worth knowing first
The JPEG compression that was already applied is permanent. PNG stops the bleeding; it does not heal anything, and the block artefacts around edges will be preserved perfectly.

Is JFIF a different format from JPEG?
No. JFIF is the standard header convention for a JPEG stream. The picture data is ordinary JPEG.
Should I convert to PNG or just to JPG?
JPG if you only want the file to open normally. PNG if the image is going to be edited and re-saved several times.
