What actually changes
ODS and XLSX are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The OpenDocument workbook is rewritten as OOXML. Sheets, formulas, cell formatting and charts map across, and Excel opens it without a compatibility prompt.
Worth knowing first
Function names differ between the two formats in a handful of places, and array formula behaviour is not identical. Anything using regular expressions in lookups, or LibreOffice-only functions, breaks and shows as an error rather than converting.

Can Excel open ODS directly?
Yes, since Office 2010, but corporate installs sometimes block it and the support has rough edges around charts.
Do pivot tables survive?
The resulting table does. The pivot definition itself often does not, so it may need rebuilding.
