Convert PDF to DOC

An organisation, often a court, a school district or an older internal system, still requires the Word 97-2003 format.

    What actually changes

PDF and DOC are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The PDF's text is extracted and written into the old binary OLE compound file that Word used before 2007, rather than into the modern XML format.

    Worth knowing first

The .doc format predates most of what a modern document contains, so styles, complex tables and anything Unicode-heavy degrade further than they would in .docx. If the recipient can take .docx, send that instead; every version of Word since 2007 opens it.

    Questions

    PDF to DOC, answered

What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?

DOC is a binary format from 1997. DOCX is a ZIP of XML parts introduced in Office 2007, and it is smaller, more robust and easier for other software to read.

Does the layout survive better in DOC?

No, it is worse. Convert to DOCX unless something specific forbids it.
