PDF pages are going onto a website as images and the page weight matters.
Pages are rasterised and encoded as WEBP, which handles both the text-heavy and photographic parts of a page better than the alternatives. Lossless WEBP typically beats PNG by 25 percent on the same rendered page.
WEBP is a browser format. If those page images are going into a print workflow, an email newsletter or an old desktop application, they will not open, and PNG is the safer target.
