    What actually changes

PSD and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The layer stack is composited exactly as it would appear on screen and written as a flat PNG. Transparency is preserved, which matters for logos and UI assets exported from a layered file.

    Worth knowing first

Everything editable is lost. Layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects and live text collapse into one bitmap, and hidden layers are simply not drawn. There is no way back to the layered file from the PNG.

    Questions

    PSD to PNG, answered

    Do hidden layers show up?

No. The conversion renders the visible composite, the same thing you would see with the file open.

Why does the colour look slightly different?

PSDs are often authored in Adobe RGB or CMYK. PNG is written in sRGB, so anything outside that gamut has to be mapped into it.

Can I get the layers back?

No. Ask for the original PSD, or for individual layer exports.
