What actually changes
WAV and FLAC are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The PCM is losslessly compressed using linear prediction, typically to 50 to 60 percent of the original size. Decoding returns exactly the original samples, and the file gains real metadata and embedded artwork.
Worth knowing first
Compression level affects encoding time far more than file size. Going from level 5 to level 8 takes several times longer and usually saves under 1 percent, and decoding speed is identical either way.
