What actually changes
CDR and PDF are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The CorelDRAW page is rendered to PDF, keeping vector geometry where possible so the artwork prints cleanly.
Worth knowing first
CDR is undocumented and its internal structure changed substantially between versions. A file from CorelDRAW X4 and one from a recent release are effectively different formats, so conversion fidelity varies by version and some effects will not survive at all.

Why do print shops still use CorelDRAW?
It dominated sign making and small format print, and studios kept decades of files and workflows in it.
Will spot colours be preserved?
Named spot colours may carry through to the PDF, but verify against the brand specification. Colour is where these conversions go wrong quietly.
