What actually changes
DOCX and EPUB are not the same picture in two wrappers.
Word heading styles become the EPUB's chapter structure and navigation, and the text becomes reflowable HTML sections.
Worth knowing first
This only works if the manuscript used real styles. A document where chapter titles are just bold 18pt text produces an EPUB with no chapters and no navigation, because there is nothing structural to read. Apply Heading 1 to chapter titles first.

Will it pass a store's validation?
It produces valid EPUB, but retailers have additional requirements around metadata, covers and ISBNs. Check theirs before uploading.
