What actually changes
MP4 and AVI are not the same picture in two wrappers.
H.264 video and AAC audio are re-encoded into codecs the AVI container and old hardware actually support, usually Xvid or MPEG-4 Part 2 with MP3 audio.
Worth knowing first
You are going backwards on purpose, and it costs. AVI has no proper support for B-frames, variable frame rate or modern audio, so the file gets substantially larger while looking slightly worse. Only do it when a specific device demands it.
