    What actually changes

TXT and PDF are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The text is flowed into pages at a chosen font, size and margin, and the result is a paginated PDF with selectable text.

    Worth knowing first

Plain text has no line length. Long lines either wrap at the margin, which mangles code and log output, or run off the page. Convert code and logs in a monospaced font with wrapping turned off and a landscape page, or accept that the structure will break.

    Questions

    TXT to PDF, answered

    Which encoding does it assume?

UTF-8. A file saved in a legacy Windows code page can produce mojibake, so re-save it as UTF-8 first.

    Can I keep tab alignment?

Only with a monospaced font. In a proportional font, tabs stop lining up as soon as the characters have different widths.
