What actually changes
WAV and M4A are not the same picture in two wrappers.
PCM is encoded as AAC and wrapped in an M4A container, which brings proper tags, chapters and gapless playback support.
Worth knowing first
M4A is the extension, not the codec. The same container can hold lossy AAC or lossless ALAC, and players cannot tell you which without inspecting the file, so label your exports clearly if both are in the same library.
Questions
WAV to M4A, answered
Which bitrate is transparent?
AAC at 192 kbps stereo is transparent for almost all music, and it beats a 192 kbps MP3 noticeably.
Is this right for a podcast?
Yes. 64 to 96 kbps mono AAC handles speech well and keeps episode files small.
