What actually changes
XLS and PDF are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The binary workbook is laid out to its stored print settings and written as fixed PDF pages.
Worth knowing first
Old workbooks frequently carry print settings from a printer that no longer exists, including custom paper sizes and margins. The conversion follows them faithfully, which is why an old file sometimes produces a PDF on a strange page size.
