What actually changes
MPEG and MP4 are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 elementary streams are decoded and re-encoded as H.264 in an MP4 container, with the audio converted to AAC.
Worth knowing first
MPEG program streams have no index. Players scan them linearly, which is why seeking in a long MPEG is slow and why some players report the wrong duration entirely. MP4 carries a proper index, so seeking becomes instant after conversion.

Why does my player show the wrong length?
Program streams do not store a duration. Players estimate it from the bitrate, and a variable bitrate file breaks that estimate.
Is MPEG the same as MPG?
