What actually changes
ODT and DOCX are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The OpenDocument XML is translated into Word's OOXML. Text, styles, images and tables carry across; the file becomes one Word opens without a compatibility warning.
Worth knowing first
LibreOffice-specific features have no Word equivalent, and frames are the usual problem. A layout built with linked text frames or with fields LibreOffice defines itself will reflow, so check anything with a fixed design before sending.

Can Word just open the ODT?
It can, but many recipients do not know that, and some corporate installs block unfamiliar extensions at the mail gateway.
Will my fonts be right?
Only if the recipient has them. Neither format embeds fonts by default, unlike PDF.
